Master of Science (M.S.): Special Education (K-12)

The Master of Science (M.S.): Special Education (K-12) at Western Governors University is designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree and a valid teaching license. This program is completed entirely online in 33 competency units. Students will take courses in three areas, in addition to completing a capstone project: special education, instructional design and performance improvement, and research fundamentals. Western Governors University states that while the program is flexible and adaptable, students should expect to spend at least 15 hours a week completing course requirements.

Prior to graduation, all students in the program are required to pass the Praxis II Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications exam. This exam is also required for state licensure.

Learners in this program will work towards licensure to work in a kindergarten through 12th grade setting with children who have special needs of varying degrees, from mild to profound. Program participants may be qualified to work in the classroom directly with students or may wish to take on leadership roles within the special education department. They may even work in private clinics as tutors or intervention specialists.

Accreditations

The Teachers College at Western Governors University has earned unconditional accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), making it the first exclusively online institution to earn that honor. Western Governors University is also regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
